It is good to see that you also link with private swim schools in your area and also access swimmers via the swim festivals. from schools and the local authority. How does this referral operate, is it a formal process? It is great to see that qualified personnel assess swimmers and that results are published. It is good to use attainment of awards for this purpose and I would be interested to know what you specifically require? It is perhaps worth considering a more frequent assessment as swimmers who are involved and are aware of their progress often make improve. It is good to see that you have included this within your action points list. May I suggest you include skills as well as personal best times? Q8 Teaching/Training environment I notice that you do not have access to a 50m pool for training. Is this something that you would like to access for perhaps your District level swimmers? Q9-12 Teaching/Training Content It is good to see that you have teaching and coaching aims which is broad based and multi skilled. As some of your swimmers access County level and above, it would be wise to link training and preparation to competition and I was pleased to see this within your action point/planning list It would be beneficial to provided members with the information. Q13-15 Learn to Swim I notice that you have a broad development for swimmers and would be interested to know more about your preschool sessions - in particular in connection with talent identification and the nurturing of natural talent? I notice that you use ASA and Club awards and delighted to see that you use part of the National Teaching Plan. As it provides a broad education in aquatics. I would welcome more information about how you find using it it helps us to review programmes when users give us feedback! I look forward to hearing more. Q16-18 Competition You indicate that you produce a Competition Calendar and indicate that you have swimmers participating up to District level of competitions. Representation at this level is something that I am sure you celebrate. The club must be proud of the role they have played in this achievement, but how do you ensure that swimmers needs eg. pool time and appropriately qualified coaches ensure swimmers can fulfill their potential and achieve success at higher level? It would be helpful if you could confirm the contacts you have at higher level referred to another section of the audit. Q19-22 Water based training I notice that the club has 4 hours of pool time available. How do swimmers access additional time to achieve a higher level of attainment? This is perhaps via the Excellence programme operated in your area. I see that you are experiencing some difficulties with regard to your land training opportunities as well as pool and it is good to see that the Group Coach and a Physiotherapist oversee the programme. I am sure you will bear in mind that it is important to have people with appropriate qualifications delivering this aspect of club activities. It may be worth considering applying for Awards for All to fund the programme. Q23-30 Education It is good that you give more experienced swimmers the opportunity to share knowledgeable and experience with younger members. It would be good to include their parents also. From the information you provide it is clear that this is an area which you wish to address. Well done, I was delighted to see that it is in the action points. I would recommend that swimmers agree personal goals. It is a known fact that swimmers who are actively involved themselves actually make quicker progress. It is good to see that there is a system for recording achievement. Q31-35 Disability Swimming Again it is good to see that the club is providing opportunities to people with a disability to be integrated into the programme and including opportunities to compete. It is important that people get the best opportunity and equity is a high priority for the ASA and for Sport England. Is it worth considering classification and registration of swimmers? One of the benefits of Swim21 is that we can all learn from each other. I hope that you will be willing to share your experiences with others who are less proactive in this area? Action Points In addition to the points you have identified I hope that you will consider the points I have made identified as bullet points in the text above. I commend your point to address the education programme as more people who understand what swimmers need the better the chance the swimmers have of success! The second part of this process the Action Planning and the pack will provide you with the template to help you make plans with short, medium and long-term goals. The ASA Development Team has produced Resources to help clubs and you can see what is on offer from the enclosed list and let me know if you want anything. You need not do this on your own.your local authority SDO, Jane Bent and others within the swimming development group, will be able to help you. In addition the GreaterSport Team may be able to help, call Martin Kay or Lindsey Whiteside on 0161 223 1002 and of course within the Regional Development Office Julie or I will be happy to help. Our full contact details are at the top of the accompanying letter but the telephone number is; Regional Development Office 0161 610 0160 and Julie Allsopp is the Regional Co-ordinator for Swim21 I wish you well. TEACHER/COACH DEVELOPMENT Q36-37 Teacher /Coach Recruitment It is good that you have a policy for recruitment of teachers and that you identify qualification on entry. It is interesting that you do not need to advertise the positions. On a cautionary note you may be well provided for at the moment but please consider succession planning. Should your club need more personnel, it could be useful to provide a Newsletter which includes advertisement for volunteers and staff. It may be that your senior swimmers move into that role and have no need of additional methods? Could the local education establishments help? Students are often looking for opportunities to support the courses/subjects they are studying. Q38-40 Teacher/ Coach Qualifications I notice that records are kept well done as this will help with your planning. As a matter of interest, I note that there you have no staff with coach qualifications though your swimmers access higher level competitions. It pleasing to note that you have attended some of the courses commonly referred to as MOS Minimum Operating Standard courses and this includes training in Child Protection and Disability swimming. I would include gaining ASA Coach qualifications within your plans and I would recommend that you address Equity in your Coaching as the priority the final one of the three MOS courses for club personnel. I know finding time and staffing issues present difficulties, but is important to plan to have people trained in Disability, Child Protection and Equity issues which are high on all sports agenda I am planning training together with the County/Active Sports Partnership which you will be aware of through your contact with the Active Sport Talent Camp and the District. Please check the web sites or contact the office for information. You may be able to receive training locally. Please notify me of any individual with an interest in working with people with a disability and I will try to ensure they are notified of any opportunities for training. It is good that staff involved at the club have signed up to the Code of Ethics. Well done. Q41-50 Teacher /Coach Training I know finding time and supporting staff to train often present the club with difficulties, so I was delighted to see that you have a commitment to training both in terms of time and finance. You will see that because quality provision and safe practice is high on the sport agenda, Training is included in the Accreditation documentation which you will be receiving. Providing an Induction Programme is a good start. I would recommend that you complete that support and take the opportunity to learn from your colleagues, by starting an Appraisal system which is a two way process so both club and individuals benefit. If you need help or further inform please contact us. It is good that there are meetings and opportunities to exchange information. I notice that there are already links with other Swim21 clubs and I am sure that greater benefits will come as the networks widen and people are more willing to share. Again well done. Q51-53 Teacher/ Coach Assessment I congratulate you on having staff involved with schools and Active Sports. I would like to know more about your school links Action Points I think the action you have identified will benefit the club In addition, I hope the points and questions raised above will help to give additional direction. CLUB MANAGEMENT Q54-63 General It would appear that you have in place a number of policies and a constitution that provides a modern approach to sport. Could you ensure that it has been reviewed recently to ensure it is up to date. Evidence of contact with the Hon Secretaty for the District, Simon Rothwell will be required for the Accreditation file. I was pleased to see that you have a web site to communicate with club members. It is important to ensure that members understand policies and procedures, such as the insurance and emergency, as well as providing them with information. I notice that you do not have a club Handbook, is this not also a good way of communicating policies and direction to your members? It is also useful for recruiting volunteers as job information and descriptions together with key roles can be identified within the document. It can easily be updated if it is a ring binder and importantly, also be viewed at the pool. It is good that number of people with knowledge of safety procedures and also ensure that the local authority keep you abreast of current Operational procedures. This is particularly important when the pool may be running with a limited number of staff. Though you state you have no written Action Plan you have already identified a number of areas you would like to address. The next section of Swim21 helps you to put these on paper, as a template is provided which makes for easy planning and also allows you to monitor progress. It is a tool which can help people understand the direction of the club and also get people involved in the running of the club. If you need help with this, please bear in mind the partners mentioned earlier and of course we will be happy to make one or two suggestions. Q64-68 Membership It is good that you are proactive in encouraging Women, Ethnic groups and People with a Disability to participate. I would encourage you to be proactive in these areas. We all need to learn from each other and share experiences to encourage wider participation in our sport. It is good that you record and pass on to appropriate people medical information. As you have access to web site, have you thought of entering club information onto the computer? Many report how usual for recording information it is. As a matter of interest, I note that you have identified a Swim21 Coordinator which is excellent. May I ask if this individual, or the club, has an email address you would be willing to share? Communication is much faster this way and we are trying to provide clubs with information and support more quickly. Well done on filling all the positions listed in Q74 Q69-70 Finance It is good to see that you have a Financial Plan and that support is available for a number of areas. I notice that most areas are covered only Social is missing from your list of budgeted items. The social aspect of club life is important and can be a good way of keeping people in the sport as administrators and/or officials. It does of course add to the swimmers experience and helps develop social skills. Some clubs plan for one or two annual events. Q71-78 Volunteers and Officials It is good that you have a policy for recruiting volunteers and to identify skills of new members. You will see from the list of Resources that job descriptions have been produced by the ASA Development Team. These are available as templates on the enclosed Resources Disc. It is good to see that you have a number of club Co-coordinators, which I hope makes the running of the club easier. Perhaps as you identify the skills of new members, you can introduce them to key officers and they could shadow and learn the roles! Training in Child Protection is essential for all volunteers and I would strongly recommend that you include this in your action planning. Action Points I agree the points identified and direct you to text above for further ideas. PARTNERSHIPS Q80 New members In another section of the audit you made reference to links with Swim21 clubs the number of which is increasing and it is good to see that you have links with some. It is also good that you have links with the local authority & educational establishments and their personnel. Government initiatives focus more and more on community focus and therefore these contacts are particularly important for our sport. In the future you may wish to link with the Specialist Sports Colleges as well as Further Education colleges. The Greatersport Officer and your local Swimming Development Officer, Jane Bent are working with the ASA on School Club Links project, perhaps you will be involved with this as it is a requirement that clubs are Swim21 clubs. Q81-82 Education Provider As you can see from the list there are a number of providers which we currently underuse. We hope to help clubs make links with some to provide opportunities for training. Q83-85 Other Organisations You work together with a number of key agencies and I trust that you have found that beneficial. I am confident that you would wish to continue to develop these contacts and establish others. I look forward to discussing more about possible links with disability organisations. Q86 88 Promotion It is good that you have a number of avenues for promotion and that you have accessed funding and that you have recognition awards. A number of clubs are now addressing recognition of volunteers and coaches as you well know the clubs would not exist without them. This may be something that you would wish to include in a medium/longer term plan. The ASA Development Team members have produced resources, which it is hoped, will ease the burden for clubs so do please contact me at the Regional Office the details of which are at the beginning of this report. Action Points I trust that information within the text above is helpful in identifying future action. I concur with those you identified but also would encourage working with equity and target groups. I wish you well with your planning and look forward to future contact.
